First Grade Science

Our first grade scientists have been hard at work these past few weeks, we have explored earth materials such as pebbles, sand and silt. We got to see first hand what effects water has on these materials and how that affects the earth. Students studied what earth materials are used for and how they surround us in our everyday lives.

Students observed how water flows by making a model of a mountain and simulating rain.

Our most recent projects include observing weather. There are three main attributes to look at when observing and recording weather; cloud cover, precipitation and wind speed. We have created a wind speed scale and tools to measure wind speed.

Teamwork!

As we begin the school year it is essential we build strong relationships and work as a team as we learn together. Recently students have been discussing the importance of rules and expectations at school and at home. We have a set of class rules that everyone had input in creating. This will set the expectations for the year and allow everyone to be accountable for their actions.

Here is a perfect example of teamwork! In math we are learning to order numbers and beginning to grasp the concept of least, greatest, and in between. Teams worked together to put a set of numbers together from least to greatest. This kind of interactive learning gets the students out of the desk and allows them to put newly learned concepts into practice, in a fun way! SDC10979.JPG

At home, families can work with the students in a similar way. While driving or cooking dinner, give your student three numbers and ask them to put them in order from least to greatest or greatest to least. If they have difficulties, try just two numbers and ask the question "Which is greater." If problems still persist, allow the student to draw counters to get a visual on which number is greater.

Welcome Back!

Welcome back students and parents! I am looking forward to
an exciting year with first grade. You can look forward to many projects and activities and you can watch our progress as we will post many pictures and video when possible. Families can keep up with what we are learning and what's to come in the future. Be sure to be on the look out for a permission slip coming home, this gives me permission to take photos and video of your students and post them to this blog. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to call.
