Photos of Photosynthesis!

As part of our unit on Photosynthesis, we spent the day outside and inside doing a Lab experiment on CO2 levels of plants! The kids got to use the Texas Instruments Scientific Calculators with the Vernier software attached to a CO2 sensor. They plugged the CO2 sensor into a clear plastic bottle in which we had put freshly picked weeds from the school yard. We did one trial outside with the sunlight and higher CO2 levels, then we went inside and did another trial. The students watched the calculator as it recorded data for 10 minutes each time, and then drew their own picture of the graphed data that was shown on the calculator screen.

4th Nine Weeks

Salutations, Harris Hawks!
It's hard to believe we are now in our last 9 weeks, but it's true!! Only 7 more weeks of 7th grade!! We need to go out with a bang, not like the Dodo into quiet extinction.

In the past two weeks, since the 3rd semester ended, Science Students have learned about Seasons, the Earth's orbit around the Sun and its effect on daylight and time, The Lunar Cycle, Eclipses, and Tides.
Next week, April 20-23 (no school on Friday - Fiesta Parade!), we will still be experimenting with Seasons and Lunar Cycles, and starting on Photosynthesis!

Week 4 is a TAKS weekso we will be ready to accomplish a lot!

During weeks 5-8, we will explore the Environment, one of my favorite subjects! The students will confront major questions, such as:
What is photosynthesis?
Why do organisms need food, water, air and living space?
How do living things get what they need to live?
What are the 5 levels of environmental organization?
What is the difference between abiotic and biotic?
How does ecological succession help an ecosystem stay balanced?
What are the three major climate zones?
How do the different biomes support different varieties of organisms?

I look forward to providing our Science Students with challenging experiences, including at least 2 days a week of hands-on lab activities.
Any questions? Please email: mcarrillo3@saisd.net
Go Forth and Explore!!

Teaching Philosophy:

In my classroom, we are all learning TOGETHER!
I promote equality, respect, imagination, creativity and curiosity.
In a nutshell, I believe that "people must KNOW that you CARE, before they CARE what you KNOW." I let all my students know that I care about them first and foremost as a human being, and secondly as a Learner.

In addition, it is my goal to infect each student with a "No Excuses" mind set - I want them to have the highest expectations for themselves. I hope they will use their skills, individuality, and confidence to overcome any obstacles or challenges that they face. We all have our own journey to walk, and each person has a unique story.

This has been my first year at Harris MS and I enjoy working with a wonderful staff of dedicated teachers, administrators, and ambitious students. We can always improve on who we are and what we do.
